"Market is full of Cartier lighters, but mostly they are silver or gold plated, with 20-30 micron thick plating. 

In the early 70's group of entrepreneurs bought declining family owned Cartier company and 
launch their first product in the "le must de Cartier" line of products, which was a lighter. 
 
An oval lighter with hidden hinges and retractable roller. Since they wanted to bring a touch of prestige to the common people, 
they made a deal with a company Silver Match which was allowed to sell gold and silver plated Cartier lighters in specialized tobacco shops. 
 
But at the same time, they wanted to make real gold Cartier objects for upper classes.
 
They made special solid gold, solid silver and mixed silver/gold lighters which were sold exclusively at Cartier boutiques. 
 
While mechanism was the same, a large part of body was made with massive gold jacket. 
 
 


My estimate by serial numbers is that for every 1000 plated lighters, one solid gold lighter was sold.
